Welcome to our first addition of The Institute for Optimal Care blog. “Poor Diet, Lack of Sunshine and Spiritual Anemia – Three Potent Contributors to Depression and Anxiety” was the title of the 2/2/2017 article on the Natural Health website of Dr Mercola (www.articles.mercola.com). In this, he sites recent research that notes a heightened incidence of depression especially in teenage girls. This may be, in part, due to the excessive use of social media which, “can exacerbate that harsh focus on looks and other judgments from peers …” The article suggests mindfulness can help to combat the effects of over-stimulation and other effects of social media. Focus on diet and increasing healthy sun exposure are also areas to look at for working with these issues in teens.
